BENEDICT Cumberbatch, the star of Sherlock and The Imitation Game, is expected to marry fiancee Sophie Hunter on the Isle of Wight today (Saturday).

Mr Cumberbatch and Miss Hunter are due to marry at a ceremony at the Mottistone Church of St Peter and St Paul, before a wedding reception at the adjacent Mottistone Manor, which is owned by the National Trust.

The manor is home to the Nicholson family – descendants of the first Lord Mottistone – who are thought to be related to the playwright, actress and singer, Sophie Hunter.

The six acre gardens are normally open to the public, however the house is only open to visitors twice a year, according to the National Trust.

St Peter and St Paul Church dates back to the 12th century.

Isle of Wight residents have suggested Benedict Cumberbatch had been seen on the Isle of Wight recently and it is understood he spent last night (Friday) at the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes.

Royal Yacht Squadron staff are thought to have been drafted in to help with service at the wedding reception, but were not told in advance where or for whom they would be working.

National Trust staff are also understood to have been sworn to secrecy.

But rumours a celebrity was heading to the Isle of Wight gathered speed this week, when marquees were seen being erected at Mottistone and details of a road closure outside the church and manor appeared in the Isle of Wight County Press.

News of the wedding and its location has been widely reported across the national media today.

In the past hour around 40 guests have arrived at the church, with several limousines seen arriving at Mottistone.

A small group of well wishers have also arrived and have been waiting at the end of the road closure, close to the church where Benedict and Sophie are due to marry.

The weather stayed dry as the guests arrived, however as the bridal party arrived at around 3.20pm the rain had started to fall and they made their way into the church under umbrellas and coats.

*To avoid the rain on the way out of the church, Benedict and Sophie were transported the short distance to the manor by car.
