Bestival parking plan to avoid traffic chaos

The Isle of Wight Council hopes to avoid a repeat of the traffic queues that blighted the start of this year's Isle of Wight Festival.

THE Isle of Wight Council is working closely with Bestival organisers, the police and other agencies to avoid a repeat of the traffic chaos which blighted the start of this year’s Isle of Wight Festival.

At the latest full council meeting, deputy leader, Cllr George Brown, was asked about the steps being taken to monitor the state of the ground at Robin Hill, particularly the car parking areas.

In a written question, Cllr Jonathan Bacon said: "Given the very high attendance expected, what steps are being taken or considered to ensure there is not a repeat of the effects on the roads and transport residents experienced at the commencement of the festival?"

Cllr Brown said the latest Bestival car park management plan was being considered by the council and other agencies.

He said: "It includes information on the number of car parks provided, including their size and the total number of parking spaces.

"It also states how the car parks will be prepared and the contingency plans for alternative transport routes from Yarmouth, Ryde and Fishbourne, should any or all of the car parks become unfit for use."

He added: "The authorities are working with Bestival organisers to ensure a situation similar to the one experienced at the Isle of Wight Festival does not happen again."

what i never understood is why the giant events such as this are placed slap bang in the middle of the island where all the traffic has to go to cross from one side to the other. it will still mean clogging of roads and stupidly long detours. christ was a mess, im not looking forward to the next installment of traffic chaos island style!

Well done Cllr Bacon - at least someone is asking the questions that need to be asked!

So.. not a lot of details actually given then. Just a load of waffle. What about transport from East Cowes? Then again, Giddings isn't involved, so maybe some thought will actually go into it.
