Bestival: Traffic plans announced

BESTIVAL traffic arrangements have been announced by the Isle of Wight Council.

Around 60,000 revellers, as well as workers and acts, are expected to descend on Robin Hill for the event, which starts on Thursday.

The council said it expected traffic around the area to be heaviest on Thursday, Friday and Monday and has urged drivers to avoid the area and designated routes around the site if possible.

It has published a map, which can be seen below, of how the roads around the site will be affected.

Rowlands Lane, Havenstreet, will be southbound only from 6pm tomorrow (Wednesday), from the direction of Havenstreet Main Road junction to the Downs Road.

This arrangement will remain in place until approximately 10pm on Sunday, when the one-way system will be reversed and traffic will flow from the Downs Road to the Havenstreet Main Road junction.

The road is due to return to a two-way system from around 6pm on Sunday.

The council said there would be restrictions to public footpaths and bridleways close to the Bestival site during the event, and a 30mph speed limit would be in force on roads leading to and outside the site for safety reasons.

To ease traffic as Bestival-goers leave the Island from East Cowes, Beatrice Avenue will be a 'no waiting at any time’ zone and will also become a one-way system from approximately 5am until midnight on Monday.

In Newnham Road, Binstead, there will be 'no waiting at any time' zones, from 5am on Thursday, until 10pm on Monday.

Vehicles parked in clearways will be towed.

A dedicated 24-hour telephone line during the event for people to contact the council with queries or complaints relating to the event (01983) 823426.

Isle of Wight Council head of economy and tourism John Metcalfe said: "We are working with the event organisers and partner agencies to keep traffic disruption to a minimum as we welcome thousands of visitors to the Island.

"Thursday, Friday and Monday are expected to be the busiest days in terms of traffic, so we would advise residents to avoid the designated routes and roads around Robin Hill on these days if possible."

Latest updates will be available online via the websites below, as well as via the Isle of Wight County Press on Twitter, Facebook and the main website.
