TOP TV cooks The Hairy Bikers have been on the Isle of Wight for their latest series of the Best of British.

The pair, Dave Myers and Simon King, were in Ventnor last night (Wednesday), having dinner at Phileas Fogg’s, before a day on the water with fisherman Mike Curtis today (Thursday).

Mike, who runs Bembridge Fish Store with his wife Ruth, took the pair fishing in the English Channel for huss.

"They got in touch with us about six weeks ago to arrange a fishing trip.

"They’re catching huss as an alternative to other white fish. It’s great exposure for us," said Ruth.

To learn how to cook the fish they visited a nearby bistro.

Catherine Bachelor, chef and co-owner of Lockslane Bistro, said: "They asked Mike if he could take them out to catch some huss, then prepare and cook it. He said he didn’t have the facilities to cook it, but told them he supplied us and we’re just round the corner.

"Huss is a great fish, it doesn’t have bones and it’s as cheap as you like. It is very popular here, where we serve it with an English parsley sauce."

Following their visit for dinner Mark Randerson, of Phileas Fogg’s, said: "It was a great night, they really enjoyed themselves and they were great fun.

"The team were very excited and its a privilege they chose us, with so many good restaurants around."

*After returning ashore Dave, still wearing his green wellies, life belt and sunglasses, said: "We've had a great morning fishing. We actually weren't out that far but we managed to come back with not a bad catch.

"We got some rock salmon, some Dover Sole and some lovely grey mullet.

"The Island is a fantastic place. It's just a shame we haven't got the time to explore it further but the filming is all scheduled in."

His co-rider Si added: "We certainly picked a beautiful morning for being out on the English Channel. At least we didn't need to worry too much about finding our sea legs.

"The fishing was good. Now all I need to do is get my welly boots off and my shoes back on."
