COWES will have a new cycle hub in a matter of days.
Red Funnel is installing a two-tier storage rack system for 72 bikes at its Cowes Red Jet terminal, as well as a repair stand and tools for users.
It will be monitored by 24hr CCTV.
The cycle hub project, expected to be up and running by the end of the month, is one of 11 projects being supported by the Isle of Wight Council from its current Sustainable Travel Transition Year (STTY) funding won from the Department for Transport.
The cycle hub, together with its twin in Newport, aims to increase the use of the 4.4 mile Cowes to Newport cycle track by commuters, encourage economic growth and reduce carbon emissions.
The new hub not only allows commuters to leave their bikes in safety, but also those who cycle to and from Newport.
Red Funnel chief executive Kevin George said: "We are keen to support the council’s initiative to encourage new users to the Island’s cycling routes and reduce carbon emissions through cycling."
Isle of Wight Council executive member for transport and infrastructure Cllr Ian Ward said: "This is part of our ambition to make cycling and walking the natural choice for shorter journeys."
