A THICK plume of black smoke hung over Calbourne this morning  (Sunday) after fire broke out at an industrial unit at New Barn Farm.

The IW Fire and Rescue Service said it received a 999 call at 8.15am to Sun Hill at Calbourne.

There are several units at the farm and fire broke out in one used to store vehicles and as a workshop.

The fire service sent a water carrier and drained a pond and cesspit to fight the blaze.

They were hampered by low mains water pressure after running a hose 200 yards from the road.

They also had to contend with exploding gas cylinders and flammable materials in the unit.

The unit was used to store vehicles, thought to possibly include some luxury cars.

The fire service confirmed that after water supply issues were resolved the aerial platform was used to help extinguish the blaze in the barn measuring 100 metres by 50 metres containing approximately 15 cars and several cylinders.

Police and ambulance crews were also at the scene but no injuries have been reported.
