A FRENCH yacht listing at an acute angle aground on an Isle of Wight shingle bank was towed free by Cowes RNLI lifeboat.

The 29ft Gavot II, with a couple and their two children on board, grounded on shingle and mud just west of the entrance to Newtown Creek yesterday (Saturday) evening.

Responding to a Solent Coastguard request, the lifeboat was launched at 6.20pm.

Lifeboat helm Neil Archer put Tony Harris aboard with a tow-rope and the yacht was eventually re-floated to return to Lymington.
