A 12-year-old was seriously injured in a road traffic collision near the Fighting Cocks pub, Arreton,  yesterday afternoon (Wednesday).

The accident occurred at around 4pm in Watery Lane and emergency services, including the air ambulance, were called to the scene.

The air ambulance was unable to land due to weather conditions however, and the boy was transported by road ambulance to St Mary's Hospital.

A hospital spokesman said the ambulance crew's assessment of the boy's condition was that he had suffered serious head and neck injuries.

The main Newport to Sandown road remained open.

This morning (Thursday) a spokesman for St Mary's Hospital said the boy had made a good recovery and was in a stable condition.

*A police spokeswoman said the boy had got off a bus and walked around the back of the vehicle to cross the road when the collision occurred.

She said they were continuing to investigate the circumstances. She said no arrests had been made.
