TWO children have been arrested following a blaze at unoccupied houses at the weekend.

Three houses in Church Path, East Cowes, were badly damaged in the fire on Saturday afternoon, prompting an investigation by Isle of Wight Police.

Two boys, aged 12 and 13, were detained by detectives on Sunday and questioned on suspicion of arson.

They have been bailed until July 19 pending further enquiries.

In a statement issued today (Tuesday) Detective Sergeant John Walton from Newport CID said:  "We’re treating the fire as arson.

"Officers from the local Safer Neighbourhoods team have been conducting house-to-house enquiries in the area and we’ve made two arrests.

"I’d still like to hear from anyone who may have seen someone acting suspiciously in the area of Church Path and Old Road around the time of the fire."

The fire at the homes at a new development in Church Path started around 5.30pm on Saturday and was put out around 6.45pm, said police.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Newport CID on 101 or the anonymous Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111. Minicom users should contact 01962 875000. Send a message direct to a police officer using our online messaging system here.
