Bridge work could take weeks

YARMOUTH Bridge is likely to be down for weeks after power cables were accidentally damaged by contractors this week.

The workers were dredging for Yarmouth Harbour Commission and the damage means the power cables need to be replaced.

River users have been informed and will be kept updated while repairs are ongoing, an Isle of Wight Council spokesman said.

The bridge is down, which means the road is not affected and remains open for vehicles and pedestrians.

Peter Hayward, Isle of Wight Council manager for highways and transport said: "The council is working closely with the harbour commission to make sure repairs are carried out as soon as possible.

"It is not a simple task to replace the power cables and requires specialist work including laying new cables on the harbour bed which will take time. I am sorry for this inconvenience to river users and hope to have power restored to the bridge as soon as possible."

so it was YARMOUTH HARBOUR that was at fault? NOT WIGHTLINK? AT LEAST their small carboard cartons of coffee wont be increased from TWO POUNDS AND TWENTY PENCE. WHAT A RIP OFF!!!

Did it not cross anybodys mind to check where the cable was, and then inform the captain of the dredger, its not rocket science
