UPDATED 17:14*

A WATER main has burst at the bottom of Staplers Road, Newport, leading to traffic problems.

The Isle of Wight Council and Newport police advised motorists to avoid the area following the burst, reported this afternoon (Wednesday).

Southern Vectis diverted all route 9 buses coming into Newport from Ryde via Halberry Lane and Fairlee Road.

According to @DairyCotKitchen on Twitter traffic was backed up to the Racecourse roundabout at around 4.30pm.

Traffic was also reported to be backed up along High Street, Newport, shortly after 5pm.

A Southern Water spokeswoman said repairing the main was a priority, but the disruption was likely to last until tomorrow (Thursday).

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused by the burst main in Staplers Road. Inspectors are currently on site trying to find the burst.

"We’ve had about 20 calls from customers to report no water. Traffic management is in place and is likely to remain in place until tomorrow."

At 5.10pm Southern Vectis reported delays of up to 20 minutes on route 5 and 9 buses due to the burst water main and heavy traffic on Fairlee Road.

There seems to be a lot of these bursts lately, or are they getting reported more?
