WORKMEN hit a water main in Newport this morning (Monday), leaving several properties without water.

Water sprayed dozens of feet in the air after the workmen hit the pipe at around 9.45am and repairs are likely to take until 4.30pm to complete, according to Southern Water.

A spokesman for the company said: "One of our water mains in South Street, Newport, was damaged by a third party.

"We have a team on site working to fix it and apologise for any disruption this may cause."

According to the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce, Tourism and Industry, Mill Court was without water all afternoon, affecting the chamber and ten other businesses.
