Bus company answers residents' calls

RESIDENTS of two Isle of Wight villages have had their calls for better bus services answered.

Announcing its summer bus timetable, following a review, Southern Vectis confirmed today (Monday) the Route 7 would now serve Calbourne and Newbridge — which since 2010 have had to rely on just one round trip a day.

The changes follow a customer survey and initially will be run on a trial basis.

Kate Goldson, landlady of the Sun Inn, Calbourne, was among those to have campaigned for the changes.

"We are very chuffed.

"It is good news in all sorts of ways. People will be able to get to doctors appointments, we are hoping for a boost in trade and it will make recruitment easier. It caused a real problem when the service stopped, people could not get here.

"It is very good timing, we hope it will be a really big boost for the summer."

General manager Matt Kitchin said: "The road network is always changing - so our timetables need to adapt to reflect the road conditions and the potential delays en-route."

Other changes include diverting all Route 6 journeys via Whitwell, following the long-term closure of the Undercliff.

The new timetable will come into effect on Sunday, May 4.

For full details see www.islandbuses.info or see below for a summary of the changes:

Route 1

No changes to daytime journeys.

The last nightbus on Friday and Saturday nights will be 03.15am from Newport and 03.26am from Cowes.

Routes 2/3

Additional time in both directions throughout the day and evenings. As a result of this the times of many journeys will change.

Additional morning journeys between Ryde and Sandown in both directions following customer requests.

Early morning journeys from Whiteley Bank will now start from Godshill, giving more early morning journeys for commuters from Godshill to Ryde.

The last night bus on Friday and Saturday nights will be 2:45am from Newport (as far as Sandown) and 2:40am from Ryde to Newport.

Route 4

Revised running time throughout the route, as a result of this the times of many journeys will change by a few minutes.

11:05pm journey from Ryde replaced by through journey on route 9 and continuing as route 5.

Route in Ryde to be diverted via Dover Street and Melville Street.

Following customer requests an additional journey will depart Ryde at 08:59 on Sunday mornings to East Cowes.

Route 6

Following the long term closure of the Undercliff all Route 6 journeys will now run via Whitwell on a permanent basis. Journeys will alternate between looping around Niton to serve the Buddle Inn and looping around Whitwell to serve Bannock Road. Both the Buddle Inn and Bannock Road, Whitwell loops have been instigated in recent months following customer requests.

Revised running time throughout the route, as a result of this the times of many journeys will change by a few minutes.

Route 7

Journeys currently calling at Thorley and Wellow will also serve Newbridge and Calbourne instead of Shalfleet. Journeys via Cranmore will continue to serve Shalfleet.

Revised running time throughout the route, as a result of this the times of many journeys will change by a few minutes.

An additional journey from Newport to Totland will run on Mondays to Saturdays departing at 7:00am and calling at Yarmouth at 7:33am in time to connect with the 7:50am ferry.

An additional journey will start from Alum Bay to Newport at 6:35am daily.

The above changes are as a direct result of customer feedback.

On Sunday evenings the frequency between Newport and Totland will be hourly from 8.10am to reflect reduced demand at this time.

Night buses on Friday and Saturday nights will now depart at 12.20am and 2.20am from Newport and 11.53am, 12:53am and 2:53am from Totland.

Route 8

Philip Y: It's the old adage I'm afraid, "You can please some of the people all of the time and you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time." That's life.

Just revised times on the whole, no need to get excited.
