ISLE of Wight bus company Southern Vectis features twice in the prestigious UK Bus Awards shortlist.
The list contains more than 100 people, projects and organisations from around the country, selected by the judges from over 250 nominations to go forward to the final stages.
The company’s Newport depot has been nominated in the National Depot category, while long-serving engineer Vernon Gibbs has been shortlisted for the Unsung Heroes award.
Mr Gibbs joined Southern Vectis in 1979 as an apprentice mechanic and is currently engineering manager, responsible for a fleet of 180 vehicles.
During his career he has managed large-scale projects, including establishing new garage and fleet maintenance facilities for other subsidiaries within the parent group.
His nomination said: "He leads by example and this, as well as his extensive knowledge, has made him widely respected by his colleagues."
Southern Vectis general manager Matt Kitchin said: "Our entry for the top national depot category is based on new initiatives introduced and partnerships which contribute to improving the local and global environment.
"We have introduced technology and training for drivers to help improve their driving skills and ultimately reduce and improve fuel efficiency.
"The business has made significant savings in energy consumption through the fitting of energy saving devices throughout the depot."
He said the environmental initiatives had changed attitudes, increased patronage and promoted bus travel as a viable alternative to the car.
He said of Mr Gibbs: "Vernon is the type of manager who will lead by example and inspire those whom work in the garage and is described by those around him as an 'ideas man.' "
UK Bus Awards chairman John Owen said: "Despite the difficult economic times, this year’s entries demonstrated clearly that creativity within the industry is still alive and well.
"The bar is constantly being raised, meaning that the innovation of a few years ago is now the everyday standard in many places.
Southern Vectis’ parent company Go-Ahead Group has 19 nominations, followed by Stagecoach with 17.
