CLIVE MENDONCA demonstrated that he is fast returning to match-fitness by scoring in Saturday's pre-season friendly against Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.

The three-nil winning margin over their Division Two rivals could easily have been doubled with a host of good chances going begging and many near misses.

Charlton included 17-year-old Paul Konchesky at left back and Steve Brown at centre back because due to injuries to regular defenders, while up front, Mendonca partnered Andy Hunt for the first time in public as the Addicks discarded their five-man midfield used unsuccessfully in midweek against Colchester.

After a low-key opening, Charlton stepped up the pressure and took the lead on 26 minutes through new-signing Neil Redfearn.

He got the vital touch on John Robinson's right-wing cross, the ball gently looping over the deceived home goalkeeper.

Charlton took only three minutes to make it two-nil.

Andy Hunt dummied Danny Mills' cross from the right and Mendonca took advantage of the confusion in the home defence to score from the edge of the box.

Wycombe rarely troubled the Charlton defence, but they did go close on two occasions near the break.

Keith Scott headed wide when well-placed and then the same player was foiled by Sasa Illic, who dived bravely at the feet of the Wanderers player.

Charlton, without needing to step up tempo, continued to dominate after the break with defenders Richard Rufus and Steve Brown both going close.

On the hour Mendonca and Hunt were substituted by Mark Bright and Bradley Allen, and the latter soon went close as the chances kept coming.

Charlton polished off a satisfactory afternoon's workout by adding a third from the penalty spot 14 minutes from time. The kick was awarded after former Charl-ton junior Nicky Mohan had tripped Steve Jones, who had earlier come on for Shaun Newton.

Jones promptly got to his feet and scored with a centrally-placed kick.

After the embarrassiment of the two-nil defeat against Colchester in midweek, manager Alan Curbishley would have been more satisfied with this effort.

Curbishley can now look forward to his testimonial match on Saturday at The Valley against Scottish Premier side Hearts.

Due to the ongoing building work, the capacity is restricted to 12,000 but there are some tickets left. Adults £10 or £8, juniors £4.

Sunday funday at Catford

CATFORD stadium stages one of its Sunday meetings this weekend with something for all the family, writes Kevin Impey.

An eight-race card, starting at 12.15pm, provides the action on the track, but the youngsters are not forgotten either.

A number of side attractions, including a bouncy castle, face painting and puppet show should keep the children amused while the parents get on with enjoying the racing.

Catford is offering two adults and two accompanied children free admission using a special voucher, which can be found on page 31.

And, just for good measure, the adults are offered their first pint free of charge and all subsequent pints at just £1.50 each. Gates open at 11.30am.
