Thorness Corner.
A CAMPAIGNER for road safety improvements has renewed his call after the latest accident on a 'potential death trap’ bend.
John Nicholson has again raised serious concerns over the 'historically dangerous’ stretch of road at Thorness Corner.
The Isle of Wight Council responded by saying it had carried out safety work and would be doing more within a few weeks.
"Although the council has tried to improve safety here by setting back the hedge and cutting a ditch into the grass, the corner remains a potential death trap," said Mr Nicholson, who travels the road to and from work each day.
"This stretch of road is surfaced with SMA, recognised as being slippery when least expected. I have urged the council to lay a coating of supergrip.
"Schoolchildren gather at the bus stop, which would be right in the way of someone losing their traction coming around this corner and right beside where the latest car left the road recently with some force.
"I have seen a tractor overturn and demolish the bus stop area."
He said poor drainage also meant water ran across the road and froze in winter, adding to the hazard.
Council strategic manager for highways and transport, Peter Hayward, said: "As Mr Nicholson points out, the council has undertaken works to improve safety on the road at Thorness Corner.
"We have recently tested the skid resistance that is laid on the road and it meets recommended safety levels. The corner is also clearly marked with warning signs such as chevrons.
"However, we have instructed our contractors to carry out drainage works to prevent water building up during heavy rain. This work will be completed over the course of the next month.
"We would, of course, remind drivers to take care when approaching sharp corners at all times, especially during wintry conditions."
