A PRESSURE group for the renewable energy sector is calling on the government to recognise the importance of tidal energy development on the Island and the Solent.
RenewableUK’s Ocean Energy Race report, published today (Thursday) has urged the government to include wave and tidal power in its industrial strategy.
It highlighted the latest developments in the sector, including PTEC, which is developing a commercial-scale tidal stream project off the south of the Isle of Wight and Sustainable Marine Energy in East Cowes, which has produced innovative platforms to host tidal turbines as well as an award winning sea anchoring system.
The report highlights the value of the marine energy industry to regional economic growth, providing jobs and potentially attracting millions of pounds worth of investment.
RenewableUK’s chief executive, Hugh McNeal, said: "The UK is the global leader in wave and tidal energy. This is a cutting edge industry creating much-needed jobs in the Solent and the Isle of Wight.
"It’s vital that the government recognises that wave and tidal power is transforming coastal communities around the UK including those in the Solent and the Isle of Wight.
"Marine energy can become a key modern industrial sector. To make this happen, we’re urging ministers to include wave and tidal power in their industrial strategy"
