A CAR fire in Newport was tackled by Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue this morning (Monday).

A fire engine from Newport Fire Station was called at 9.22am to the fire in a people carrier car on Castle Road.

A spokesman said the fire was reported by a concerned member of the public who said the car was over-revving and issuing thick black smoke.

The fire was out by 9.35am and Island Roads were called to cover a small oil spill with sand.
