ST HELENS Sports and Carnival, due to take place today (Monday), has been cancelled due to torrential rain.

The family sports and tug of war competition, which usually take place on the village green, were called off earlier today, and organisers have just confirmed this evening's carnival procession has also been cancelled.

A statement posted on the carnival website at 1.50pm said: "The carnival has also been cancelled due to the ground conditions, which have worsened considerably since this morning. Regrettably, it is unlikely the carnival will be rescheduled."

St Helens Carnival is more than 100 years old, making it one of the oldest in the country.
