STRONG winds have brought down trees around the Isle of Wight this morning, with one hitting parked cars in Shanklin.

David and Lesley Ord, both 52, of Hyde Road, were woken at 5.30am to the sound of branches crashing onto their two cars, a Mitsubishi Shogun and Ford Mondeo.

Mr Ord said: "There was an almighty crack that woke us up and we looked outside to see this tree had fallen on our cars.

"It was a huge shock, we were shaking for about half an hour.

"The Shogun came off worse, with a dented bonnet and roof, but the Mondeo isn’t too badly damaged.

"We are waiting for the council to come and clear the tree off the cars."

Trees were also brought down in Yaverland Road, Shanklin, Main Road, Havenstreet, Victoria Road, Freshwater and Cowleaze Hill, Bonchurch, but have been cleared by police and the Isle of Wight Council's highways team.

Bad weather has also led to cross-Solent travel disruption.
