The closed public toilets in Bath Road, Ventnor.
PUBLIC toilets at Ventnor could be converted into a new cafe or beach shop.
It comes after planners approved a change of use application, submitted by the Isle of Wight Council, in relation to public toilets in Bath Road, which closed as a result of council cutbacks.
Full planning permission was also granted for the demolition of the existing covered seating area to make way for a single-storey conservatory extension.
Speaking at Tuesday’s planning meeting, local member, Cllr Susan Scoccia, said: "It’s a shame we are losing those toilets under this proposal but unfortunately no-one came forward to take them on."
With pedestrians often having to walk in the road due to the narrowness of the pavement, she feared the situation could be exacerbated by a busy business being there.
It was a worry shared by Cllr Vanessa Churchman who said: "I think it could be quite dangerous."
Cllr Julie Jones-Evans said the application did not go far enough and she would have liked to have seen a cafe with toilets.
The application was granted permission but only after committee chairman, Cllr Richard Hollis, used his casting vote.
