Changes to Wightlink sailings

By a County Press reporter

Tuesday, July 15, 2014

MECHANICAL problems on one of its catamarans have been blamed for changes to some Wightlink sailings to and from the Isle of Wight today (Tuesday).

The company said sailings due to leave Portsmouth at 15 minutes past the hour and from Ryde at 47 minutes past the hour would run as timetabled.

The 6.40am from Portsmouth would not sail however and the following sailings would use a charter vessel (taking 25 minutes):

From Ryde Pier Head 07:10, 08:10 and 09:10
From Portsmouth Harbour 07:40 and 08:40

Ohhh Tiggy, I fear Pete has been lying to you. He hasn't given you an accurate account of what happened. In fact it bears no relevance to the truth.

Switching from a twice yearly service and refit, to once a year, might save money in the short term but filthy black smoke and engine failure will cost you more in the long run!

'Mechanical problems'...& of course the other good one is 'operational reasons'...

I used Wightlink last year coming back from Portsmouth to Fishbourne. The Captain came over the PA system which resulted in fits of laughter from many passengers. Firstly, he apologised for the condition of the ferry (it looked like a sunken hulk dragged up from the seabed). He then went on to say the weather was fine but would 'probably' be getting worse - I believe he used the phrase 'probably the calm before the storm'. Finally, he asked the passengers to report any suspicious baggage or persons to a member of the crew. I know this particular vessel was only fit for blowing up but I don't think the Taliban would be too interested in a clapped out Wightlink ferry! Anyway, a most amusing little announcement, which either made people laugh or depressed them even more!

Forget breakdowns, this firm could do with a bit more management training. They just sacked a temporary contracted employee because his permanent contracted ‘manager’ couldn’t count to twelve and authorised a staff travel pass that shouldn’t have been issued. Did anything happen to the feckless manager? NO. Easier to support their own inept management authorising tickets in error than someone on the front line. Amazingly whilst throwing discounts at the IWC to try and placate them Wightlink offer just four free travel tickets and ZERO discount for it’s own employees. Shocking.

Surprise surprise it never seems long between not having mechanical problems on this service or are they just trying to save money again.
