A BLACK-tie charity ball was overshadowed when Isle of Wight Council leader Cllr David Pugh clashed with the partner of MP Andrew Turner.
Cllr Pugh lashed out verbally at Carole Dennett, partner and parliamentary assistant of the Island MP, following a reception hosted by council chairman Cllr Arthur Taylor on Friday.
The bust-up came after Ms Dennett offered to give Cllr Pugh’s upset girlfriend a lift home after the event.
Footage obtained by the County Press
showed Cllr Pugh at one point telling Ms Dennett to "f****** well leave us alone," in the car park of Cowes Yacht Haven, where the event was held.
Ms Dennett confirmed she offered the girl a lift home but declined to comment on Mr Pugh’s behaviour.
Following inquiries on Monday, Cllr Pugh exclusively told the County Press
he regretted using language he would not normally use in public.
"Following my attendance at a charity fundraising event there was an upsetting situation and I directed a comment at the MP’s parliamentary assistant.
"My girlfriend and I removed ourselves from the situation as quickly as possible and left together," he added in a statement.
• The Isle of Wight Council said the incident was a private matter and it was unable to comment. It is not known whether Cllr Pugh will now face action under the code of conduct, which covers councillors when they act, claim to act or give the impression they are acting as a representative of the authority.
