Charity helping to train crewman

Cowes RNLI crewman Peter Cunningham is to receive training thanks to funding from the Lloyd's Register Educational Trust.

A LIFEBOAT volunteer working to make the seas around the Isle of Wight safer is to be given vital training thanks to a charity.

The Lloyd's Register Educational Trust (LRET) is to fund part of the crew training for Cowes RNLI Lifeboatman Peter Cunningham.

The 28-year-old will complete the charity's trainee crew course at the RNLI College in Poole, next week, said a Cowes RNLI spokesman.

The intensive training will include learning how to abandon ship, team survival swimming techniques, coping in 'life-rafted simulated darkness', dealing with fires, how to right a capsized inshore lifeboat and the importance of lifejackets.

Peter, of Cowes, said: "Although I have had over eight years of experience with non-RNLI lifeboats both in the UK and New Zealand, this course will bring me in line with the current RNLI practices, which are somewhat different from those used by other services with which I have worked."

The LRET is an independent charity that funds work to improve safety on land, at sea and in the air.

The LRET has provided £1m funding to cover the Sea Survival element of the RNLI's Trainee Crew Course from January 2011 to December 2015.

Allen Head, RNLI Training Divisional Inspector, said: "The training we give to our lifeboat crew members is considered by many to be among the best in the world.

"No matter what a person’s skills or background, we pride ourselves on how well we prepare our volunteers to save lives.

"The support given by The Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust is hugely important to the RNLI.

"We are extremely grateful that it has chosen to fund sea survival training, which teaches vital core skills to our volunteer crew.

"This training is central to allowing the RNLI and its volunteers to stay safe while on rescue missions.

"It equips volunteers with essential survival skills; providing them with the courage, poise and self-confidence to save lives even in the most perilous seas."
