FIREFIGHTERS were called to extinguish two chimney fires which started within minutes of each other on Saturday night.

Two crews were sent to a blaze in High Street, Bembridge, at 6.19pm.

They spent more than an hour tackling the fire, which spread through the hearth to a first-floor bedroom.

The firefighters had to remove the floorboards and part of the ceiling to get at the fire, said a spokesman for the IW Fire and Rescue Service.

Fourteen firefighters were also called to a property in Rook Street, Parkhurst, at 6.24pm.

The operation lasted about 15 minutes.

Stirrup pumps and rods were used to clear the chimneys in both cases and no-one was injured.
