A WINDOW technician who has a phobia of both lifts and heights is to abseil down the Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth, next Saturday.

Chris Taylor, 50, from Calbourne, who has raised thousands of pounds for charity over the last five years, is taking on his latest fundraiser for the Isle of Wight-based Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.

He said: "Although I’m up and down ladders all the time. I’m acrophobic with a fear of heights as well as claustrophobic with a fear of enclosed spaces, so it is a double whammy for me.

"I have not been in a lift for years. But to get to near the top of the 560ft tower I will have to get in one and even though I’m told it will only take about 30 seconds, I will be sweating by the time I get there."

Chris abseiled down St Mary’s Church, Carisbrooke, 18 months ago, in another fundraiser, but that was just 75 feet.

He added: "I will come down in my own time but I just won’t look down while I’m doing the abseil.  I’m not going to be beaten by this, I am determined to complete the double."
