Christmas shelter unaffected by fire

By County Press Reporter - Saturday, December 19, 2009
THE fire in part of KJ’s Youth and Community Centre will not affect a homeless charity’s annual Christmas shelter scheme.
While most Islanders will have the comforts of home over the festive season, there will be many who are vulnerable and sleep rough.
Island homeless charity People Off The Streets (POTS) aims to help as many people as possible over Christmas by providing the facilities of the youth centre, in Lower St James’s Street, Newport.
POTS opens its eighth annual Christmas day shelter for the homeless and vulnerable on Sunday.
It will remain open until Sunday, January 3.
Opening hours are from 11am to 8pm daily, except for Christmas Day and Boxing Days, when the centre opens between 9am and 8pm.
Etty McKinley, who runs POTS, is appealing to Islanders to volunteer to help, from cooking to cleaning, or by donating useful items, from toiletries and festive food to sleeping bags and gifts.
Donations can be left at KJ’s or Boots and Camo, 60A Union Street, Ryde.
• Anyone who can help can contact Etty on 07731774470.
