Church arsonist jailed for four years

AN ARSONIST who set fire to the altar at Carisbrooke's St Mary the Virgin Church has been jailed for four years.

Kevin Lee Williams, 24, of Downsview, Sandown, was sentenced this afternoon (Friday) at the Isle of Wight Crown Court for setting fire to the church and for stealing a cross and crucifix on November 27.

Williams was also sentenced for stealing beer from Carisbrooke Co-op and for smashing windows at the Eight Bells pub on the same date.

Williams, who pleaded guilty to the offences, will serve half the sentence in custody and the other half on licence.
