CHRISTMAS classic cars gathered in Newport’s St Thomas’s Square.

Members of the Vectis Historic Vehicle Club drove their classics into the square on Saturday, explaining to confused children there were three Santas because they weren’t the real thing — just his helpers, said club chairman Peter Hodgson.

"We spent five hours in the square and really turned some heads.

"There was a rare black and chrome 1948 Chrysler New Yorker, which had been hidden away in storage for many years before being restored," he said.

"There was an Austin Healey 3000, MGs, a 1933 Singer and an Aston Martin DB7, but oddly what caused most interest was an unrestored 1973 Triumph Vitesse.

"We hope to beat the £650 we collected last year for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice."
