A church minister got an unpleasant surprise on Sunday morning when a car landed on top of his wife's vehicle in the driveway of their Borehamwood home.

The Rev David Mackay, who is the minister at Borehamwood Baptist Church, in Furzehill Road, discovered the crashed vehicle, just a few feet from his front door, at around 3am.

The Toyota MR2 came off Furzehill Road, knocked down a bus stop sign, ploughed through a wall outside the church and collided with the car.

Police said the driver, a man in his early 20s from Potters Bar, left the scene at the time of the accident but reported it to the police a few hours later.

Mr Mackay said: "I was upstairs asleep and I didn't actually hear the crash, but one of my neighbours heard it and phoned to tell us what had happened."

The minister, who lives in the house with his wife, Alison, and their three children, said that her car, a Mazda 323, had been written off.

The driver of the Toyota was expected to appear before police today to answer questions in relation to the accident.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call police on 01707 638102.
