Closing store attracts queues of shoppers

DOZENS of shoppers queued to get into the closing down sale of established Isle of Wight carpet and furniture shop Dabells today (Wednesday).

As reported by the County Press last week, the store is due to close at the end February after more than 100 years of trading.

A closing down sale began this week for invited shoppers and will be open to the public on Friday.

Owner and draper David Edwards told the County Press: "I will miss it, certainly, but I am approaching my 70th birthday and it seems an appropriate time to hang up my scissors."

The business was founded by Charles Dabell, Mr Edwards’ grandfather, in 1911.

i can remember getting my school uniform in the High Street shop, too...there was a smaller section on the right of the main door for school related clothing. I was bought a very nice flowery dress there for my sister's best friend's wedding in September 1971. Also, great fun this, the hat section upstairs with the the Pantry nearby, and the drapery section next to Pyle Street. I also recall going into Janice Bull's and getting a nice coat, and likewise in Paige's. And finally! queueing up outside to watch the first Star Wars film, March 1977 (?), Savoy (later Dabells). Happy days, when going to Newport meant something exciting!

What a shame to see Dabell's going I remember getting my school uniform there ( when it was opposite the post office ) another bit of Newport history going.
I wonder how many of your readers can remember the old Newport when we had a great high street with good shops.
