TWO anglers were rescued from the Solent this morning (Saturday) after their boat capsized.

The fisherman were plucked from the water by the Cowes RNLI lifeboat after their boat overturned in the sea half-way between Gurnard and Lepe, Hants, at around 9.30am.

They had been in the water for around half-an-hour.

Solent Coastguard received emergency calls after the men's cries for help were heard by people on shore.

A coastguard spokesman told the CP the men had left Buckler's Hard, situated on the banks of the Beaulieu River, earlier this morning.

Explaining what happened, he said: "As they tried to pull up their anchor, they over-balanced and ended up in the water. Thankfully someone heard them shouting from the shore.

"The harbourmaster launch and the Cowes RNLI lifeboat went out to pick them up."

He said initially there was some confusion over where the anglers were.

They were brought ashore near to the Cowes RedJet terminal where an ambulance was take them to St Mary's Hospital, Newport.

It is understood at least one of the men was suffering from the effects of hypothermia.
