Coastwatch on the lookout for new Isle of Wight volunteers

Isle of Wight MP Andrew Turner meets the Needles Coastwatch team.

EYES and ears are needed for the National Coastwatch Institution lookout point at the Needles.

Isle of Wight MP Andrew Turner has joined the call for more volunteers to man the Needles station, which operates seven days a week.

The lookouts help to ensure the safety of people off the West Wight coast.

Mr Turner recently visited the station, where he was met by station manager Jim Scott, deputy manager Don Hughes, and secretary and PR officer Maurice Fairall.

Mr Turner said: "They are currently seeking a few more volunteers willing to commit to at least four hours a month to help cover the work that needs to be done. I’m sure there are Islanders who would like to spend a few hours in such beautiful surroundings, watching out over the Needles and the local wildlife, whilst helping fellow Islanders and visitors."

Mr Scott said: "We are flexible with regard to the time persons can commit to and no previous experience is required as full training is given. We welcome enquiries from both men and women aged between 18 and 80 who are reasonably fit as access to the lookout involves a 'close to vertical' ladder."

Those interested should contact the team on (01983) 853687 or (01983) 755649.
