THE Isle of Wight will become the only English constituency to be given special protection under government reforms that will carve up every UK boundary.

Ministers had proposed uniting areas of the Island with Hampshire as part of plans to equalise constituency sizes.

But the Government caved in to mounting pressure to keep the Island separate and last night the Commons agreed to install two MPs to represent it from the next general election in 2015.

*The amendment received the backing of Parliament this afternoon (Wednesday).
