METROPOLITAN Police Commissioner Sir John Stevens apologised to wrongly sacked Asian police sergeant Gurpal Virdi yesterday (Feb 6), as a final settlement was reached between the two parties.

Sgt Virdi was set to receive an out-of-court settlement of £90,000, according to the Commission for Racial Equality.

The sergeant, formerly posted at Acton, was accused of sending racist hate mail to fellow officers and himself four years ago.

In January, a Metropolitan Police Authority report upheld the findings of a previous employment tribunal that had cleared the officer of any wrongdoing.
