EAST Herts top young sporting stars are gearing up to do battle for their district at this Sunday's BAA Stansted Hertfordshire Youth Games.

This year, the district is represented by a total of 21 teams, making its entry one of the largest in the games.

The East Herts competitors will be among about 2,000 youngsters, ranging in age from eight to 15, who are taking part in the Olympic-style competition at Welwyn Garden City.

Budding sports stars will compete in 10 different categories basketball, cross country, football, hockey, netball, rugby, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.

The event, which was launched last month by hurdler Sally Gunnell, is sponsored for the first time by Stansted Airport.
