CONTROVERSIAL plans to reshape GP services, which could result in the closure of rural practices, have been put forward for public consultation.

The Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said a new strategy was needed to cope with rising demand from the Island's ageing population, coupled with a crisis in GP recruitment.

Patients will be encouraged to use technology — to Skype with their doctor, for example — and manage their own health conditions.

The CCG's assistant director of primary care and corporate business, Caroline Morris said: "The challenges we face on the Island are well documented. We need to think creatively and work together to come up with the best solutions for the future.

"The majority of healthcare is carried out in a primary care setting so it is really important we face up to the challenges our GP practices are facing and put proper plans in place.

"Our aim is to make sure the NHS continues to deliver great care to our patients for years to come. I hope people will respond to this consultation, letting us know what they think and help us find the answers to some of these difficult issues."
