IN a dedication ceremony on Saturday on the first National Holocaust Memorial Day the walled garden at Harlow Study Centre was named the Holocaust Memorial Garden.

The garden is dedicated to victims of all nations and creeds who have suffered persecution or been the victims of atrocities.

About 60 people representing all faiths, including council chairman Terry Abel, Harlow MP Bill Rammell and Harlow Rabbi Michael Pertz, watched as a commemorative plaque was unveiled. The event was televised by Sky News.

Speaking at the unveiling, Mr Rammell said: "I'm very pleased that National Holocaust Memorial Day has been established, and that we are marking it in Harlow with the creation of this memorial garden.

"It's so important that we all remember the evil that was the Holocaust and understand how racism and anti-semitism created it.

"I worry for our children that as time passes and the Holocaust becomes more like ancient history, it ceases to be a reference point and they lose the memory of just how evil racism is. That is why it is so important that we remember."
