Controversial head steps down

Margaret Young.

THE headteacher at the centre of unrest at an Isle of Wight primary school has resigned.

Margaret Young was due back at St Saviour's, Totland, last month, following a 21-month period of extended sick leave, but did not return due to personal reasons, parents were told.

In a statement issued to parents yesterday (Tuesday), governors said: "It is with much regret that Mrs Young has decided to stand down from the headship of St Saviour’s. Mrs Young acknowledges the past two years have been unsettling for everyone involved in the school community.

"We all understand our roles and want the best for all children and this is most effectively achieved through selfless teamwork and shared values.

"Mrs Young wishes the whole school community success and trusts it continues to flourish under new leadership."

As previously reported, Mrs Young was the subject of votes of no confidence by governors and parents last year, when there was an unsuccessful attempt to dismiss her.
