PLANS to sell off one of its buildings, which sparked a petition signed by 1,300 people, have been deferred by Bembridge Parish Council.
Bembridge Parish Council wants to sell 5-7 High Street and its attached public toilets, to fund a new community hub in the village.
But the sale would displace three businesses based at the building, including fishmongers Captain Stan’s, which has a lease until January 2019.
At a parish council meeting last night (Tuesday), co-owner, Mike Curtis, warned the knock-on effect would be closure of Captain Stan’s other outlet, in Ryde.
The petition, signed by around a third of villagers, was handed to the parish council by Spike Hughes, who owns SH Tree Services, which would also be affected.
The parish council unanimously agreed to give further consideration to the project and deferred the decision on its sale until May.
