Council deficit 'worst for decades'

FINANCE bosses at the Isle of Wight Council say the authority is in its worst financial position for decades — and things could get even worse next year.
The grim message about the state of council coffers was outlined to members of the ruling Conservative cabinet and a packed public gallery as members met to discuss controversial budget proposals yesterday (Tuesday).
Sweeping cuts of £2.7 million to the Supporting People programme are still on the cards, as well as inflation- busting increases in the cost of parking on the Island.
However, the Isle of Wight Council leader Cllr David Pugh, has left the door open for opposition groups and organisations affected by the planned cutbacks to come up with alternative proposals in the weeks leading up to the budget- setting meeting on February  24.
