Council hit by bags of ‘teething’ problems

CONFUSION over the new waste collections has led to piles of rubbish building up in Island streets and some residents have still not received their wheelie bins.

County Hall has been bombarded with questions from confused residents. The number of calls about waste leapt from 50 to 3,000 a day after the new system was introduced two weeks ago.

After collection dates were changed in several areas, some residents put their rubbish out on the wrong day and missed their new pick-up date. Posts on the Isle of Wight Council’s Facebook page reveal piles of black bags have subsequently been left in some streets for more than a week.

The authority has also admitted some people are still waiting for their wheelie bins and food caddies — although this amounts to just one per cent of properties — but has pledged to deliver the remaining recycling containers as soon as possible.

Landlord John Kerr, who owns a block of 29 flats at Cross Street, Ryde, said he had to pick up his own clear sacks, rather than wheelie bins, for his tenants’ recyclable items.

"Because we didn’t have any clear sacks in time for the first recycling collection, everyone just put their rubbish in black bags as usual. But they weren’t picked up last week because it was a recycling week, so now we have this huge pile of black bags," he said.

"And it’s not just us — I’ve seen bags of rubbish everywhere, especially in Ryde."

There have also been complaints about Island Waste lorries causing traffic delays by travelling slowly, particularly between Cowes and Newport, and this route will now be rescheduled to avoid the morning rush hour.

Despite these initial problems though, the council says the new system is working well and will save £1 million over the next three years.

Cabinet member for the environment, Cllr Edward Giles said: "Despite a number of teething problems, it appears it has been embraced by the majority of residents and there has already been a marked increase in recycling and food waste being processed.

"I am very confident landfill figures will be improved within the next few months."

We have had no problems with this scheme. We recycled over 90% through the green bin and put out just two small carrier bags for two weeks rubbish. Love it

Councils across England have been offered £250.000 by the government to go back to weekly and normal collections. I'm baffled why the IOW Council should want to disqualify themselves from this grant by proceeding with a project other councils are ditching.

The island must be the last place in the UK to move to the wheeled bin system - on that basis there must be any number of brains to pick. But did our incompetent Tory council think to ask? They know best.

Very poorly project managed. No dedicated helpline. One of the original targets was to reduce the number of polythene bags - so they issue 1.4 million to last 6 months and they are smaller than black sacks so you have to use 2. Just issue bins to all households except flats!

if my company had been run in the same way the council operate i would have been bankrupt in a month.
i would suggest, order number of bins and caddies based on the electoral roll and all other housing databases for delivery in December, from 1st January start at the needles with every person and vehicle the council owns and fan out westward delivering to every address.
continue through February and have a dedicated hot line for any people missed .
1st March start new collecting regime after giving the public clear instructions throughout.
what has the council done, haphazard bin deliveries and immediate segregated rounds, no one knows what is happening so the wrong bags are out on the wrong days, bin men refuse to collect and the island is reduced to a rubbish tip.
ir ecall something to do with breweries that this council coudn't organise

This is a case of the council acting blindly and not having any forward thinking ,and as for saving money you must be joking ,how much money has already been spent on this senseless piece of gobbledygook .One of the reasons for moving to the Island over 20 years ago was how clean it was ,now in one foul swoop it has been turned into a rubbish tip .Whoever it was that posted this stupid scheme upon us should be brought to book and things will only get worse ,it smacks of a ploy just to get rid of staff on the bin collection rounds and the thought of the consequences as regards to hygene have not been taken into account .The council should admit now they have got it wrong and ditch this scheme before it gets any worse.

Wheelies are due to be available in March Im told , for those who havent got them yet and there are a lot of Black Bags ripped open with contents all over the place in the Wroxall area, though my Clear bags & Organic bucket was taken this week, so my black bag goes out next week but even with the card sent and a special larger size seperate Instructions cards made by family member for me, I still keep getting it confused as to what and when... :(

we also live in ryde and are still waiting for bins and bags, the lines of green boxes lining the streets and the piles of uncollected black bags is making the island look like a rubbish tip
