THE jury in the trial of a parish and former Isle of Wight councillor, accused of sex offences, has failed to reach a verdict.

The Crown Prosecution Service will decide this week whether 73-year-old David Rex Whittaker, a member of Newport Parish Council, should face a re-trial after a jury failed to agree today (Monday).

The jury went out to consider its verdict last Friday.

After seven hours and 19 minutes of deliberation, the jury today told Judge Roger Hetherington it had not and would not be able to reach a verdict.

The councillor, of Redstart Close, Newport, denies charges of causing two boys to sexually touch a female, sexual touching of a girl aged under 16, engaging in sexual activity in the presence of children, sexual assault against one of the boys and causing the children to look at an image of people engaged in sexual activity.

He was bailed to a provisional re-trial date of January 27.
