POSTERS encouraging people to join the police force will be appearing across the county this week as Hertfordshire police steps up its recruitment campaign.

Officers want to ensure the campaign stays in the public eye despite record numbers of applications compared to this time last year.

In 2001 more than 200 new recruits joined the county's police force including 29 in December the highest intake for more than 27 years.

Ms Gail Boulter, personnel services manager, said: "The number of applications Hertfordshire Constabulary has received has tripled compared to this time last year as a direct result of the force's recruitment campaign.

"But we still have a shortfall of officers and hope the posters may entice potential new recruits to find out more about a police career in Hertfordshire."

The posters encouraging potential police officers to join up are appearing at train stations across the county. For information ring 0800 358 3990 or see www.herts-recruitment.
