Crew called to prison fire

FIREFIGHTERS were called to HMP Isle of Wight in the early hours of this (Monday) morning to a cell fire.

The fire at Parkhurst Prison was reported at 5.08am and the prisoner moved to another cell while firefighters extinguished the mattress fire in an operation lasting less than 20 minutes from the 999 call.

They used breathing apparatus to combat thick smoke.

The prisoner was reported to be unharmed.
