ASSETS seized from criminals will be used to fund community projects in a new police scheme.

The CashBack for Communities Fund will use assets seized using the proceeds of crime act to fund crime fighting initiatives.

From Monday people will be able to apply for grants of between £300 and £3,000.

Assistant Chief Constable David Pryde said, "The money we take away from criminals belongs back in the community which is why we have set up our CashBack for Communities Fund.

"We want to encourage and support the work of local initiatives that help to keep the neighbourhoods of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight safe and pleasant places to live.

"We want to hear from any community group or organisation that runs projects or initiatives which help to reduce crime and requires some funding towards the work they do."

A spokesman said applications could come from public, private and voluntary sector organisations and groups for community initiatives that help to reduce crime, the fear of crime and/or help to tackle anti-social behaviour.

The closing date for applications for this round of funding is March 31, 2013.

Applications can be submitted at the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation website — www.hantscf.org.uk search for "CashBack for Communities".

How about using the money for more police cars and more policemen to be out on the streets of the island, instead of what police we have got are stuck in stations pen pushing
