MP GARETH Thomas has called for the development of a London Tram network to tackle congestion and overcrowding on the Underground.
Four schemes for tram routes have been developed by individual boroughs working in partnership with local businesses, said the Harrow West MP.
These would cost between £250,000 and £750,000 to reach the stage of consultation on routes.
Mr Thomas said people will not switch to public transport unless it is reliable, frequent, efficient, safe and clean.
"Tram systems meet these criteria," he said. "A double tram track has far more capacity than a dual carriageway yet requires only one-third of the space.
"Why are we not seeking to build on the popularity of the tram to help solve London's congestion problems? Now is surely the time for proper consideration," he added.
