A campaign to build an indoor climbing wall in the West Wight is looking to raise £20,000 through an online fundraising drive.
West Wight Sports and Community Centre, Freshwater, is aiming to collect the money through Crowdfunding, a scheme where people can make pledges to a project in return for a reward.
Centre manager Clare Griffin said: "Our new climbing wall is going to be a fantastic new addition to the centre and one which can be enjoyed by the whole community.
"We chose Crowdfunder to raise the money, as it’s a perfect fit. It enables the community to become part of the project through the rewards we can give them as a thank you for supporting us."
Everyone who pledges money will be featured on the Wall of Supporters displayed in the centre cafe and receive an invitation to the official opening ceremony.
Plus there are a range of other rewards depending on the level of pledge, including vouchers for climbing sessions, gold memberships to the sports centre, and private climbing sessions for groups.
The wall costs around £40,000 and Clare added: "So far we have raised £13,000 through the Three Peaks Challenge, which saw a group of staff, centre users, families and friends attempt to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 24 hours last summer
"The Crowdfunder campaign has already started and runs for just eight weeks, so we need everyone to spread the word and tell all their friends and family about it.
"This week alone, we have been pledged more than &a mp;#163;500 but there is only a short period of time for people to back us. Once we have all the figures we will then apply for a grant to help us with the rest.
"It’s 40 years ago this April since work started on the first swimming pool. It only happened because the community came together. We hope we can recapture that community spirit in 2017 with our climbing wall project."
