THOUSANDS flocked to Yarmouth this weekend for the Old Gaffers Festival.

The event was held a week earlier than usual due to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – but chairman Debbie Cotton said: "It was an unbelievable few days."

She added: "We were so lucky with the weather, especially after the last couple of months."

"The highlights for me were 'Magical Bones’ in the tent, an escape artist who managed to get himself free of chains through dancing.

"And on Saturday the Yarmouth RNLI gave a fantastic search and rescue display which involved the Solent Coastguard helicopter.

"We have been going for 16 years now and it’s just a great festival for people of all ages.

"Now the committee has a break until September, then we start organising again. We like to think we have had some high quality acts this year and we hope to make next year’s event even better."

For a full report and pictures from the event, please see this week’s Isle of Wight County Press, Friday, June 1.

I think it is absolutely wonderful that Her Majesty the Queen should visit Yarmouth. It is proof if ever proof were needed that the Royal Family is a much loved insitution. The Royals perform a brilliant service for this country and I'm sure the locals were thrilled by Her Majesty's presence, and proof of Her Majesty's fondness for the Island, especially as she is due back in July. Well done ma'am!

Why doesn't the not fit for purpose IOW Council just put the road resurfacing budget cash in a cardboard box outside County Hall with a notice saying 'Please help yourself'. This is only our hard earned money and will cut out the hassle of the middleman. Sorted.
