FEARS the post of Unison’s full-time branch secretary Mark Chiverton may be under threat in the latest budget cuts were allayed during discussions yesterday (Tuesday).
Mr Chiverton, Unison regional organiser Andy Straker and Isle of Wight Council chief executive Steve Beynon met ahead of yesterday’s cabinet meeting.
It followed a row over whether Mr Chiverton was told to ditch his secondment to the IW Council as Unison representative if he wanted to stand as Labour candidate in the general election.
The council has given Mr Chiverton a written assurance he does not face an ultimatum between the two roles but there were further concerns his job may be threatened in budget cuts.
The council plans to save £50,000 by reviewing how it funds trade union representation, which led to fears Mr Chiverton’s post may be cut.
Mr Straker said: "Steve Beynon has given a categoric assurance this was not an attack on Mark or on Unison and savings will be made across the board from all unions.
"We want to have a discussion after the cabinet meeting, with all the unions and Steve Beynon believes he knows where there could be savings.
"The council could not carry on if they removed Mark Chiverton. The cuts will not just be aimed at one individual."
